Camarillo State Hospital opened in 1936. It closed in 1997 due to the defunding brought on by deinstitutionalization. It sat abandoned for many years until the state repurposed the buildings, giving it new life as California State University Channel Islands. The campus sits just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, CA.

This hospital has significant importance to me as it was the first one that I ever visited. I first visited it in 2003 when it was mostly abandoned and unoccupied. I have since been back multiple times as it has gone through its various changes in becoming CSUCI. Most of the old hospital buildings are now classrooms and dorms.
