McLean Hospital opened on Oct. 1st 1818 as the first hospital for treatment of the mentally ill in New England and the 4th in the United States. It was founded on the principals of “Treatment Morale” and treatment reform that was happening at the turn of the century as based on Dr. Philippe Pinel and William Tuke.  It is still operational and is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The memoir “Girl Interrupted” is set at McLean.
