Central State Hospital, originally Milledgeville Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1842 as Georgia’s first psychiatric hospital. At its peak, Milledgeville served an estimated 12,000 patients. While the hospital is still operational as a forensic hospital and community care service, many of the original buildings have been abandoned. There is a museum on site where some of the original hospital equipment, paperwork, and patient belongings has been preserved.
